Acceptance at The Overcast

My story, "Every Orphan Child to a Good Home Should Go" will be produced and podcasted by The Overcast in September. I'm glad to have it reach a wider crowd. I'll post the link as soon as it becomes available. At the moment, I have been working on translating one of my unpublished stories into Spanish. It has had the benefit of showing me where the original (in English) has weaknesses, or doesn't flow as well. Once I'm done with the translation, I will have to go back and revise, revise, revise. I hope this will make both versions stronger, and more likely to be picked up by a market. I've still been waiting for responses on several stories I have circulating. I am eager to have good news from that quarter soon....

The 2017 Nebulas Conference

I went to the SFWA 2017 Nebulas Conference in Pittsburgh over the weekend with fellow writers Chris M. Rose, Jeremy Gottwig, and Doug Dluzen. It was the first time for all of us, going to the Nebulas. What followed was four days of socializing with other writers and editors in the field, which was fun, but also draining for me. Pittsburgh was more elegant than I had imagined, and loved how the city is cradled by hills on all sides. I had a blast meeting many people who I had only ever chatted with on the Codex writer's forum, and sitting in on many of the panels programmed for the weekend. I was moved by astronaut Kjell Lindgren's speech about his experiences aboard the ISS, which he accompanied with several pictures of the Earth, as seen from space. I was happy for all the winners of the Nebulas, but was especially thrilled...

2016 Award Eligibility & Recommendations

I had mentioned in a previous post that I had several things I was thankful for in 2016. Most of what I've been thankful for are my stories published this year. Eligible Work All of my eligible work in 2016 is short fiction: First, my story, "Clown Car, Driven Once, Never Emptied" appeared in Unlikely Story's "Clowns: The Unlikely Coulrophobia Remix" in January 2016. Charles Payseur seemed to like it quite a bit! My second story, "Choices, In Sequential Order" first appeared in Nature in April 2016. Nature also produced a podcast version of the story that sounds amazing. My third story is "Every Orphan Child to a Good Home Must Go" which appeared in Daily Science Fiction in October 2016. My Recommendations My reading has been mostly of short form fiction, but some of the stories I read this year that stood out to me follow. "Things With Beards" by Sam J. Miller. "When You Work for the Old...

So, the Hugos. . .

While I enjoyed reading Chuck Tingle's posts, I must admit that I'm not at a point in my writing career where I followed all of the ups and downs. I also realized that the one thing I read was Naomi Kritzer's award-winning story, "Cat Pictures Please." What I'm getting at is that I'm woefully behind on my reading.  ...

Balticon 50 is Coming. . .

Within the first year of living in the Baltimore area, I became a member of the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. I joined because of the space, which I've described as a cathedral dedicated to science fiction, and the ancillary activities. Their claim to fame, and what pays the bills, is Balticon. Confession time: I'm not a big fan of conventions. In part, I think it has to do with lack of conventions in Puerto Rico (it's become a bigger thing since I've left), as well as the demands of being in a public space with large numbers of people. Also, I am a bad fan--too finicky, perhaps. For instance, I like the idea of a show like Star Trek existing than the actual show (in all its incarnations), but rarely watch it. The same goes for most of the touchstones of being a sci-fi or fantasy fan. All that said, however, I'm excited...
