Update: Clarion, Curious Fictions and Ghost of Tsushima

This is the last week of the Clarion Write-A-Thon and I’ll be honest: I am happy that I have several stories ready to revise and polish, but glad that as with all good things, it is coming to an end. That’s not a knock; simply that I’m not sure I can keep up with that same pace for a longer period of time. It was good to stretch, to get out of my comfort zone and see what I can accomplish, if pressed.

In the end, I’ll have five new stories to get ready for submission, plus one that I haven’t started yet. I missed my mark only on Week Four because the prompt (which I’ll paraphrase as, “imagine a recipe for an impossible dish and write a story about it”) didn’t spark an idea until far too late, and even then, it’s a full-length story and not flash. I’ll be starting that very soon after the Write-A-Thon comes to a close.

My next bit of news is that I posted the memoir “Disintegration Loops” I’d written here on Curious Fictions. Mainly, I thought that was a good piece of writing I’d done, and wanted more people to read it. It turns out that it’s now the featured story on the site! If you haven’t seen it, give it a read over at Curious Fictions.

Samurai and Horse, Napping After a Long Day of Repelling Mongol Hordes

I started playing Ghost of Tsushima whenever I can, and I can say without reservation that it’s the best open world game I’ve played, full stop. The historical context is fun, and playing as a samurai attempting to repel the Mongols invading the island of Tsushima offers great context, but what keeps drawing me in is how beautiful everything looks.

For all my affection for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its open world is but a pale echo of what Ghost manages to capture. Part of this may be the limitations of the Switch compared to the PS4, but I feel like it’s something else, something I can’t exactly articulate that is giving me a different feeling, a deeper connection to the story.

With the PS5 already announced, this may very well be the last big game for the PS4, and if you have one (and aren’t afraid of just how immersive gameplay is), do yourself a favor and pick it up.
